Data Journalism Visualization Proposal

For my data journalism visualization assignment, I want to research the effect of the pandemic on alcohol consumption. During these hard times, it can be difficult to cope with certain trials and tribulations that individuals and family's face as a result of the pandemic. For college students, adapting to a new lifestyle that consists solely of online learning methods is one of the many challenges that have been faced due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Individuals turn to many different coping mechanisms when dealing with day to day struggles, whether its healthy choices such as working out and cooking, or not so healthy options such as nicotine addiction and alcohol abuse. I want to research more about this subject because it is something I have seen occur in my immediate area being a student at Slippery Rock University.

In order to conduct this research, I will pull data from multiple online resources including the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, as well as research provided by the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health and a recent study performed by the Kent State University School of Public Health. All of these sources provide data and information regarding alcohol consumption among college students during the pandemic.

Lastly, for the video interview portion of the assignment, I will be interviewing Jake Trone, a Grove apartment resident, who is a first hand witness to the increase in partying and drinking habits as a result of the pandemic.
